Art Pilates: Where Movement Connects Body and Mind
A Sanctuary of Movement in the Heart of Seoul
Nestled in the foothills of Bukhansan Mountain, Art Pilates studio basks in the warm winter sunlight. With its cozy atmosphere and panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, the studio feels more like a peaceful retreat than a fitness center. Here, I met Yang Bo-mi, the director of Art Pilates, a woman who embodies the philosophy of connecting body and mind through movement.
Yang Bomi, Nurturing the Body's Potential Through Movement
Could you please introduce yourself and tell us what inspired you to start Art Pilates?
Hello, I'm Yang Bo-mi, the director of Art Pilates in Pyeongchang-dong. I wanted to create a space where I could positively impact people's lives through movement. To me, movement is not just exercise; it's about breathing life into the space where our spirit resides. I wanted to help people unlock their hidden potential through movement.
I understand that you have a background in dance and musical theater. What led you to transition from the stage to the world of Pilates?
I've always been happiest when I'm using my body to express myself. It felt like my calling. There's an indescribable joy in expressing oneself freely. I realized that I could experience that same sense of liberation and energy through Pilates and Gyrotonic movement, just as I did on stage. It was a natural progression for me, and now, 20 years later, I can see how all the pieces fit together.
You're particularly passionate about Gyrotonic, and you've traveled to Italy, San Francisco, and Singapore to study this unique movement method. Could you share some of your experiences and tell us how Gyrotonic differs from Pilates?
I've had the opportunity to learn from incredible teachers in San Francisco, Singapore, and Rome. Each experience has been unique, but one of the most memorable was the Gyrotonic International Festival in Rome in 2023. During a workshop led by Master Trainer Debra Rose, we explored the concept of "wrapping," where the body is gently bound in elastic fabric during exercise. This external pressure allowed me to deepen my focus on my internal sensations, emotions, and movement. It was a transformative experience that solidified my desire to share this incredible method with others.
I'm also grateful for the connections I've made with leading Gyrotonic and Pilates centers, such as SFGYROTONIC in San Francisco and Inspine Pilates and Therapy in Vancouver. I'm excited to continue my education with a trip to Paris in 2025.
Gyrotonic: A Movement Method That Connects Body and Mind
Gyrotonic is still relatively unknown. Can you tell us about its origins?
Both Gyrotonic and Pilates are movement methods that emphasize the connection between the body and mind, although they approach this connection in different ways. Gyrotonic is a unique system of movement that uses three-dimensional, circular motions to expand one's sense of space. It requires balance, weight distribution, and coordination to execute the movements gracefully.
Unlike Pilates, which focuses on developing specific muscles through linear movements, Gyrotonic encourages a more holistic approach to movement. It's a practice that requires inner balance as well as physical balance. It's about connecting with others, sharing experiences, and celebrating the joy of movement.
Through the circular movements and mindful breathing, Gyrotonic offers a unique opportunity for self-discovery. It's a journey of exploration and connection, both within oneself and with others.
Beyond Flexibility: The Journey to Balance
The image of planets orbiting in space comes to mind when I think of Gyrotonic's circular movements. It feels like our bodies are constantly moving and changing, just like the universe.
You're right. Gyrotonic is about more than just physical flexibility. It's about cultivating a deep awareness of one's body and mind. As you experienced, it requires intense focus and attention to even the smallest movements. I encourage my students to observe and feel every nuance of their bodies.
Why is this focus so important?
I believe that my role as a Gyrotonic instructor is to guide students on a journey of self-discovery. Teaching exercises and sequences is just the beginning. What's truly special about Gyrotonic is its ability to evoke emotions and connect people with their inner selves.
Every client has a unique story, and I tailor my approach to meet their individual needs. Our destination is the joy and exhilaration of movement, and the path we take is different for each person.
The Impact of Mindful Movement
How does this emphasis on mindful movement affect flexibility and balance?
It has a profound impact. The Gyrotonic curriculum itself is designed to promote physical balance. But it's more than just a set of exercises. It's a practice that cultivates self-awareness and body intelligence.
As students become more attuned to their breath, their movements, and their center of gravity, their bodies naturally begin to move with greater harmony and fluidity.
Transforming Lives Through Movement
Gyrotonic's flowing movements are not only beautiful to watch, but they also create a sense of deep tension and release. It's a captivating practice that enhances flexibility, balance, and inner peace.
The beauty of Gyrotonic lies in its seamless connections. Each movement flows into the next, creating a continuous wave of motion. It's like expanding your personal space through movement.
This expansion requires a continuous flow of energy, moving like breath through the body's contractions and relaxations. It's as if life itself is being expressed through movement.
How do you guide your students through this process of connecting movements and creating a flow?
Many people come to Gyrotonic with preconceived notions about themselves, shaped by societal expectations or personal experiences. These can create limitations in their ability to express themselves freely. My first priority is to create a safe and supportive environment where students feel comfortable exploring their full potential.
I strive to be a compassionate guide, helping them to accept themselves as they are and to trust that I'm there to support their growth. Then, I introduce the Gyrotonic method with clarity and precision. Gyrotonic is a journey that begins with self-acceptance and courage.
Nurturing the Next Generation of Wellness Leaders
I understand that you're also involved in training Gyrotonic instructors. What qualities do you hope to instill in your students?
I'm excited to be a part of the Gyrotonic instructor training program. It's a huge responsibility to train future instructors, as they will go on to touch the lives of hundreds of clients.
My goal is to share not only the technical skills of the method, but also the philosophical depth that underlies it. I believe that many people are drawn to Gyrotonic because they sense this deeper meaning.
My principle is to stay true to the founder's vision and to convey the essence of the method. I believe that those who come to me for training are drawn to my passion for movement, my ability to connect with others, and my commitment to creating positive change. It's incredibly rewarding to know that people travel from far and wide to learn from me. I'm committed to honoring their time and trust by continuing to learn, practice, and share my knowledge.
Do you have any plans to integrate your experience as a musical theater performer with your work as a Pilates and Gyrotonic instructor?
I'm exploring ways to incorporate music into my classes. My background in dance and musical theater has given me a deep understanding of movement and expression. I'm excited to share these gifts with my students and clients, creating moments of joy and inspiration in their lives.
A Day of Movement and Connection
Our day began at the tranquil Art Pilates studio, nestled in the foothills of Bukhansan Mountain, and ended with a peaceful moment at the Baeksasil Valley. Surrounded by the serene beauty of nature, we felt a deep sense of connection and peace. It was a reminder that movement is not just about physical exercise; it's a journey of self-discovery, connection, and joy.
As the sun set over the valley, we carried with us the warmth of the day and the inspiration to continue exploring the transformative power of movement.
